Street Fighter is one of the games in my childhood that really stood out to me because of the crossover. I remember fondly of going camping with my family and my cousin brought some of the figures with him and we were playing with them on our way. I specifically remember his Cyclops with the leather jacket because I thought it looked so cool. While I didn’t have any, my older cousin had some of them and I would play with them all the time. The game is a bit busted in terms of balance and combos, when you really know what you’re doing, but it is really fun and just great seeing these two franchises cross over with each other.Ī really cool thing that was made were the action figures that had characters from the game.

Xmen vs street fighter intro series#
The reason why the Versus series is my favorite is because these Street Fighter characters get to hang loose and do bigger things than they can in Street Fighter games. The graphics are largely the same as they have been with the Street Fighter cast using their Alpha versions. Following its predecessors the sound effects are all great and the voices are still as great as I remember them. I hear it almost any time I think about X-Men vs. To me, the music is very iconic, especially the character select menu music. Typically when we go through a character ending of an arcade run we get happy or mellow endings, but with this game there’s a couple of sad ones thrown in. Something that I like, that I haven’t mentioned yet, is something that this game as well as Darkstalkers does with the endings: making the endings for some characters sad or tragic. Similar to the past games there are character endings. There’s a slight story derived with some elements of the Age of Apocalypse storyline, but it’s nothing apparent. I’m not quite sure what the reason is behind this, but I think it’s interesting. The character you control is whoever is the last character you controlled during your fight with Apocalypse, the character you didn’t control will be your opponent. You just have to look carefully to see who’s in them.Īfter you defeat Apocalypse, there’s one more additional fight against your partner character. In Apocalypse’s stage, there’s a bunch of characters in these containment tubes as well. There’s plenty of cameos in this game whether it’s from the background in the stages or endings. If you hold down the Start button and select her, you actually get her Alpha outfit, it’s a nice little touch. There’s also a slight secret with Chun-Li in this game. The final boss of this game is Apocalypse from Marvel and he is playable in the PlayStation version of the game in Vs. For me, I typically used Ryu and Rogue, but I’ll also use Charlie, Chun-Li, Cammy, and Storm. This roster is quite large for the time and it was really cool to be able to have a Street Fighter character work with an X-Men character. Akuma (Who’s a not so hidden character). In future games, if you defeat your opponent using a simultaneous super, you sometimes will get some funny names. You can also bring both characters out to perform a super together if you have enough meter. Another thing is that both characters of a team would have to be KO’d in order to win or lose. With the tag mechanic, we get to have 2v2 matches where we can team up some of our favorite characters together. Street Fighter brings in the tagging mechanic that many subsequent games will use as well. Now, in my adult years there is a nickel arcade that I know that has this game and I play it every single time I go there.Ĭarrying over elements from Marvel Super Heroes and Children of the Atom, X-Men vs. This game is one that I played so much of when I was a kid that it would be all I spent my quarters on when I would find it in an arcade.
Street Fighter pits 2 series that I never would’ve thought would be interacting with each other into reality. If there is any single fighting game that really gave me that sense of fun and wonderment, it has to go to X-Men vs.
